Eatymology

A dictionary of dishes, and the words that named them.

How to read this

Each entry separates two histories: the word and the dish. They often point at different places, different peoples and different centuries. The note under Where they diverge says so instead of hiding it.

Every factual line is a claim with a source you can open. The quoted sentence is the evidence, kept short. Where sources disagree, both are shown and the claim is marked contested. Where a source does not state something, the entry stays silent rather than guess.

This is a prototype. Entries are compiled from Wikipedia and Wiktionary, and checked by fetching each source and matching the quote. It is not a recipe site, a restaurant guide or a nutrition database — it is a dictionary of dishes, for now.
